Global Taskforce calls on the localization of SDGs
Metropolis joined the delegation of the Global Taskforce of Local and Regional Governments which attended the 5th High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), which took place at the UN Headquarters from July 10 to 19. In this occasion, during which national states reviewed their performance on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Global Taskforce stressed the progress made on the Sustainable Development Goals at subnational level.
The HLPF is the official UN platform for the annual follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda, and is therefore a vital space for local and regional governments to underline the role of strong local leadership and commitment in the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The theme of the 2017 panel was "Eradicating poverty and promoting prosperity in a changing world", and focused on the reviews of the following SDGs:
1. End poverty in all its forms everywhere
2. End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture
3. Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages
5. Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls
9. Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation
14. Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development
Remarkably at the HLPF sessions “Local 2030 – Hub for Sustainability Solutions”, which brought together a variety of stakeholders the Global Taskforce delegation presented, with the leadership of UCLG, the report “National and sub-national governments on the way towards localization”.
The localization of the global agendas is a priority for Metropolis, especially regarding the metropolitan level. Starting with the publication “Metropolises adresing the global agendas” (Issue Paper #2 of the Metropolis Observatory), we seek to shed more light into how our members are concretely accomplishing the SDGs and other commitments established at worldwide level.
