Context

“For as long as they have existed, cities have been destroyed--sacked, shaken, burnt, bombed, flooded, starved, irradiated, and pillaged--in almost every case they have risen again” (Vale & Campanella, 2005). Cities are complex and extremely vulnerable to threats from natural or man-made disasters.

World population growth, globalization, climate change are forcing policy makers to rethink strategies to plan for and manage a range of risks, not only environmental but also economic, social, medical and territorial cohesion.

In order to understand the global context and to address the challenges of climate change we propose a training session to debate about the importance of building resilient cities with an integrated level of planning and management.

We will try to illustrate the importance of finding practices needed in the coming decades to prevent climate change and mitigate its effect. It focuses on strategies to adapt the future impacts of different challenges, especially water as it is one of Africa’s main challenges.

Objectives of the training:          

• Understand the resilience-building process and the concept of urban resilience.
• Build capacities of our cities to meet future crisis as well as existing stresses.
• Gain knowledge on the city needs and  importance of setting priorities
• Gain broader perspective on adapting and mitigating climate change disasters.
• Learn how to Shift from grey to green-infrastructure.
• Learn about strategies of water resilience
