Since its establishment in 2012, the Guangzhou International Award for Urban Innovation (Guangzhou Award) has successfully held 4 editions and it is currently in its 5th cycle this year.Over the years, the Guangzhou Award has become an important knowledge platform for the local implementation of the United Nations 2030 Agenda and New Urban Agenda. With the call for submissions ended in late October 2020, the 5th Guangzhou Award has received 273 submissions from 175 local governments in 60 countries and regions. The 270+ applications have been submitted for review by the Technical Committee (TC). For the very first time, the TC, comprised of 11 international experts across 16 time zones, met virtually to review, assess and select 30 deserving city initiatives and 15 outstanding city initiatives. After months of demanding virtual meetings, the shortlist has finally come out.
