The side event will be the opportunity to present the Metropolis’s research “Safety and Public Spaces: Mapping metropolitan gender policies” to map existing policies, instruments and strategies being carried out by metropolitan governments, members of the association, around women’s safety in urban public spaces, a priority in both the New Urban Agenda (NUA) and the 2030 Agenda, SDGs 5 and SDGs 11. Under recognition of the safety as a necessary condition for sustainable urban development, the session will be focused on making know the research initiative’s results obtained by Metropolis, highlighting the achievements and making visible the shortcomings in the implementation of SDG 11. On the other hand, experiences and lessons on metropolitan policies targeted at ending sexual violence against women in urban spaces will be shared by panelists. They will reflect on how to overcome challenges and gaps in achieving gender equality and women’s and girls’ empowerment in relation to safer and more inclusive metropolis.
